Sports photography is much more than freezing a moment. It's about telling stories through movement , conveying the excitement of a game, and capturing that split second that changes everything.
It's not just about pressing a button, but about anticipating, observing, and being prepared . Today I want to tell you how I work when I'm at a sporting event and what you can do to get those photos that make people feel the action in every pixel.
Recommended equipment for sports photography in Barcelona
Choosing the right equipment is key. In my case, I usually work with two camera bodies:
📷 Sony A7III , my versatile choice for general photography and situations where I need quality and speed.
📷 The Sony A1 II , my camera specialized in sports photography, with ultra-fast bursts, precise focus, and spectacular performance even in demanding conditions. It's the perfect tool to capture every detail of the game.
As for goals, there are three that are essential in my backpack:
Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 Sports – ideal for following the action at a distance without losing sharpness.
Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GM – perfect for bench portraits and close-up scenes.
Samyang 14mm f/2.8 – I use it for very wide or creative shots, especially in ambient or POV situations.
The combination of a fast body like the Sony A1 II and a bright lens makes all the difference when it comes to freezing the exact moment of the goal, the celebration or the spectacular fall.

Anticipate the move
In sports, the best photo isn't the one that's already happened, but the one that's about to happen . That's why, beyond technique, it's important to know the game : understanding the movements, predicting where the ball will go or how a player will react can be the key to being ready just in time.
A trick I always use: keep your eye on the viewfinder even when there's no direct action . Often, the most powerful gestures happen between plays: glances, frustrations, hugs… that's where the real story lies.
In sports photography in Barcelona, it is essential to anticipate the play, understand the rhythm of the game, and predict where the action will occur.
Settings that never fail
Although each sport has its own particularities, there are configurations that almost always work:
🏃♂️ High shutter speed (1/1000s or more) to freeze the action.
📸 Burst mode to not miss the key moment (here the Sony A1 II shines with its high-speed bursts).
🌤️ AF-C (continuous focus) to track the subject's movement.
🔆 Automatic ISO to quickly adapt to changes in light without losing speed.
When I'm looking for a more creative effect, for example in a race, I also use techniques like panning (slower shutter speed and camera movement) to convey a sense of speed.
Perspectives that tell stories
Don't limit yourself to the typical sideline shot. Changing your point of view can completely transform an image.
📉 From the ground: adds dynamism and makes the subject look more heroic.
🏟️ From the stands: it provides context and shows the magnitude of the event.
📐 POV or subjective shot: creates closeness with the viewer, as if they were inside the field.
I like to combine different angles in the same event, so the final report not only shows the game, but the entire atmosphere surrounding it.
The perfect photo doesn't exist... but you can get pretty close.
The reality is that in sports photography you're not always going to nail the shot. And that's okay. The important thing is to be prepared, observe, and keep trying . Every event teaches you something new, and every shot you miss brings you closer to the next great image.
For me, that's the magic of sports photography: the blend of technique, intuition, and passion. Because in the end, capturing the perfect moment isn't just about pressing the shutter… it's about being in the right place, at the right time, with your eye on the story you want to tell.
✅ Conclusion: If you're starting out in sports photography or simply want to improve your results, remember: know the game, choose your equipment wisely, shoot in burst mode, experiment with angles, and above all, always anticipate . The perfect moment is out there… you just have to be ready to capture it.
